The Constitution Suite; Recently renovated and renamed to match the grandeur of Mayhurst Estate and to reflect the history it holds. Formerly called the Piedmont Suite, the Constitution Suite is now named in honor of President James Madison, architect of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights and whose family built Mayhurst in 1859.
The Constitution Suite consists of two rooms divided by a full private bathroom with a shower, a tub, and a spacious vanity. The antique queen bed overlooks the gas fireplace and half round window that provides beautiful views of the garden courtyard. The second bedroom in the Constitution suite has two twin beds, a writing desk, and an electric fireplace for those cool evenings. The top floor also has a private living room sitting area with games, puzzles, and a grand view from the 6-foot large round window that overlooks the hillside leading to the pond. If you are looking for a truly historical experience, look no further: The Generals Room is the perfect place for the Civil War enthusiast.
Just three years after Mayhurst’s construction, over 18,000 troops were housed on the property during the Civil War. During the winter months of 1862, this main floor room was General A.P. Hills’ stay while he made Mayhurst his headquarters. In the course of the war, both General Lee and General Stonewall Jackson would also stay in this same room. The original hardwood oak floors harvested from Mayhurst’s trees, three gorgeous 10-foot-tall arched windows paned with the original wavy glass, and the original black marble fireplace all speak volumes about Mayhurst’s rich history and unique architectural beauty. This room is situated near the dining room along with the veranda and features an impressive 7-foot-tall antique bed and a bath with a walk-in shower. The General’s Room is the ideal place for you to savor the 163-year-old history, beauty, and charm of this old home. Come and enjoy this little glimpse into America’s fascinating history.

What we love about Mayhurst Estate is her close ties to American History: Built by James Madison’s great-nephew John Willis, it is only fitting that Mayhurst’s original master bedroom Madison Room pays tribute to the former president and his wife, Dolley. Wallpapered in royal ruby red - the First Lady’s favorite color - and equipped with a king-sized poster bed suited for an 1800’s President, this room exudes a sense of eminence. Furthermore, the stately dining table, reading chairs, and gas fireplace turn the Madison Room into an enjoyable resting place. And one cannot forget to mention the east-facing Palladian window overlooking the front lawn and pond.
This room’s bath is equipped with a vintage clawfoot tub, a marble vanity, and a beautiful arched window.
