Leo LaMar (1902-1962) owned and operated the Ozark Club on Great Falls’ seedy lower southside from 1933 to his death in 1962. It was Montana’s most famous jazz hotspot. Leo, himself, was well-known for his ability to maintain a successful business in a time known for racial and cultural intoleranc. During and after World War II, Leo broke racial barriers with Black and White dancing and socializing together while enjoying the finest jazz between Chicago and Seattle. Shortly after Leo’s death, the Ozark Club burned in suspicious circumstances but is well-remembered at The History Museum with “Nights at the Ozark,” jazz performances in its honor.

Rolfe – Born in Vermont, Herbert Percy Rolfe (1849-1895) moved to Montana with his family in 1875. Paris Gibson hired Rolfe to survey the townsite in secrecy in the summer of 1883, and he served as Gibson’s lawyer and surveyor in the early years of the town. He broke with Gibson politically, and in 1888 founded the Republican newspaper, the Great Falls Leader, in opposition to the Democratic Tribune.

After his wife died, Vaughn and his infant daughter Arvonia, moved to Great Falls, where he lived the rest of his days. He built the Arvon Block, home of the Celtic Cowboy Pub and Hotel Arvon in 1890.
