What is ADA compliance?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that was enacted in the early 1990's to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination. In 2010 it was updated to include website accessibility. Currently all government websites are required to have and follow WCAG AA requirements. How do I check the ADA compliance of my Website and Booking Engine?

Although there are many software options to check WCAG AA and ADA compliance, one of the best is found in Google chrome. Why? Because Google is the internet standard.

Keep in mind there are dozens of automated tools that check for WCAG AA compliance. Many of them have variations in how loosely or strictly they interpret the requirements. Automated tools also vary in quality and many do not have mechanisms for identifying false positives. Some items that are reported by these automated tools are actually acceptable after manual review.

What are some of the most common website issues to fix?

The most common ADA issues have to do with screen readers for the visually impaired. They are:

• Alternate text for images–This allows the screen reader to describe the picture.
• Empty Text Field–This might cause the screen reader to say "missing item" or cause navigation disruptions.
• Color Contrast–Color contrasts should be at levels that make it easy to read text.
